                    What is the FNSSP?

“The First Nation Student Success Program (FNSSP) is a proposal-driven program designed to support First Nation educators on reserve (Kindergarten to Grade 12) in their ongoing efforts to meet their students' needs and improve student and school results. The Program's overall objective is to improve the achievement of First Nation students on reserve by focusing on the priority areas of literacy, numeracy and student retention.
The three Program components work together to achieve this overall objective.
The results of the student learning assessments and other information will help
schools identify needs, targets and activities to improve results in the areas
of literacy, numeracy and retention. Student learning assessments will also
provide data for performance measurement, which will in turn generate reports on
results for students, families, communities and AANDC.

                    Program Components:

The program will focus on three components - school success plans, student learning assessments and performance measurement:

                    a) School Success Plans
The aim of this Program component is to introduce a consistent and comprehensive school success planning process, and to
support the development and implementation of the activities outlined within the school success plans. The plan must focus on the three priority areas of literacy, numeracy and student retention.

                    b) Student Learning Assessments
The purpose of student learning assessments is to gather information to support the school success planning process. The
results of student learning assessments are used to identify areas to be targeted for improvement. Results are aggregated at the provincial and national levels to measure and report on progress and outcomes.

                    c) Performance Measurement
The purpose of the Performance Measurement component is to support a First Nation school's ability to monitor the progress of
students, manage school and program-related information, and make it easier to gather, analyze and report on
                    financial and performance indicators.

                    Participating Schools

Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute (KTEI) was successful in their 2012 proposal  to be the lead in the First Nation Student Success Program for 11 First Nation Schools including:

Constance Lake First Nation – Mamawmatawa Holistic Education Centre
Dokis First Nation – Kikendawt Kinoomaadii Gamig
M’Chigeeng First Nation – Lakeview School
                    Sagamok Anishnawbek – Biidaaban Kinomaagegamik
Shawanaga First Nation – Kinomaugewagamik Elementary School
Sheshegwaning First Nation – St. Joseph’s Anishnabek School
Temagami First Nation – Laura McKenzie Learning Centre
Wasauksing First Nation – Wasauksing Kinomaugewgamik
Whitefish River First Nation – Shawanosowe School
M'Chigeeng First Nation- Kenjgewin Teg Secondary School
Nipissing First Nation- Nbisiing Secondary School

The FNOSR was choosen by the FNSSP project committee as a means to provide the First Nations with a conistent data base system that would in turn allow aggregation of data.  Aggregated data between the First Nations provides an increased method for tracking student performance, as a whole, ergo allowing the First Nations to provide greater support in the areas that may require focus.  Year One of the project (2009/2010) allowed the project to collect/extract baseline data; the second year of the project (2010/2011) focused on moving forward with the data to drive instruction that will ultimately increase student achievement, student retention, and literacy and numeracy levels amongst our First Nation schools. In 2011/ 2012 we have continued moving forward entering more assessment data and also focusing on training our FNSSP schools to ensure they are comfortable using the FNOSR system.

                    FNSSP Update
The First Nation Student Success Program (FNSSP) team members at Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute continue to work towards improving the Literacy, Numeracy and overall school success initiatives in our participating community schools.  Our FNSSP governing committee is continuing to meet to advise and discuss program concerns, resolve issues and share successes.

                    We’re hitting the books!
Data collection continues in the areas of Reading and Writing using two tests, namely, the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) and PM Benchmarks.  These results and future data will be used to improve reading and writing instruction in our schools.  The information will be collected as a conglomerate of 10 First Nation schools and will serve to report to INAC on improvement and concrete goals in Reading, Writing and Mathematics for our schools.

                    We’re hitting the roads!
Our Literacy Resource Teachers are not only busy with assessments but also with ordering new materials to enhance classroom and school libraries for Reading, Writing and Math instruction.  Our Native Language Specialist is busy travelling and consulting with each of our schools Native Language teachers on curriculum development and programming.  The Project Assistant is also travelling to our First Nation schools to provide direct assistance in the use of our data collection tool, the First Nation Online Student Registry, for a preview of our tool visit, www.fnosr.ca.

                    We’re sharing!
We will be soon unveiling an online platform on which to share our team’s work, resources, and helpful links.
